Ray Gilmore was a marine biologist and huge fan of whales. His work with The Nat began in 1953 and continued for over 30 years. The research he did on whale migratory patterns helped preserve the gray whale.
Ray wanted others to experience the joy of seeing whales off the San Diego and Baja coast, so he started taking the public on whale-watching excursions. More than any other person, he helped educate people about how lucky we’ve been to have these beautiful creatures so close by.
He loved watching whales so much, he basically invented whale watching.
We invite you to celebrate nature with us and join our Museum Whalers for whale watching excursions just off the San Diego coast and experience the thrill of seeing these magnificent mammals for yourself.
The story of The Nat is the story of regular people doing special things. People who love nature and want to enjoy it and protect it for others. They made us who we are today. And today, big things are happening as we celebrate our 150th anniversary. We’re here for nature. And we’re here because of people like you, who love it as much as we do. Learn how to be part of the biggest year in our history.
