The SD Herbarium was founded on the collection of Daniel Cleveland, dating to the 1870s. Reid Moran’s collections from Baja California, made primarily in the 1960s through the 1980s, built the herbarium into one of the best for that region. Jon Rebman’s collections continue to build on that strength. The collection consists of significant holdings in Crassulaceae and Cactaceae.
Our historic collection for San Diego County is entirely databased and nearly completely georeferenced. The recent collections made through the San Diego County Plant Atlas project have increased our collection by over 54,000 in just over 5 years, doubling the number of records from San Diego County.
The herbarium is available by appointment only, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 3 PM. Appointments may be requested by calling 619.255.0229, or sending an email to botany@sdnhm.org. See our policies and protocols for additional information.
