In December 2003 the San Diego Natural History Museum, in collaboration with the Irvine Museum, premiered its exhibition, Plant Portraits: The California Legacy of A.R. Valentien. Winner of the 2004 Western Museums Association Excellence in Exhibition Award, the exhibition displayed 80 stunning watercolor paintings of California plants painted in the early 1900s by Albert R. Valentien. The exhibition toured the United States from January 2005 through January 2009, with funding generously provided by the Irvine Museum.
