Founded in 1981, PRONATURA, is a nonprofit, Mexican civil organization, whose mission is to protect and conserve Mexico's biodiversity. To accomplish this mission, PRONATURA works regionally in the Baja California peninsula, in the Mexican northeast, in Sonora, in Veracruz, in Chiapas, and in the Yucatan peninsula.

PRONATURA seeks to promote and establish appropriate mechanisms that guarantee the permanence of ecosystems in its country as a primary resource of goods and services for its people. Thus, PRONATURA collaborates with local communities, government agencies and other national and international organizations, and bases all its activities on scientific research and conservation actions in a non-confrontational approach.

PRONATURA is acknowledged as a scientific and educational organization by the National Science and Technology Council (CONACYT). It is a member of the National Commission for the Use and Knowledge of Biological Diversity (CONABIO), and of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (UICN). It is also a partner of The Nature Conservancy, the largest international conservation organization.

PRONATURA'S activities are financed through the contributions of members, private companies, international organizations, foundations, and through product merchandising.
